I haven't personally gotten one of these, but I know of two folks who have. Since several people here have hotmail accounts that I'm aware of, I thought it'd be wise to alert you-all.
Yeah, thanks for the heads up, but I have to say that's sort of obvious... Looking at the style it's written and the fact that MSN would deal a situation like this much better.

Thanks Jess. I don't deal with hotmail anymore after my account was hacked a few years back (some SOB ran up several thousands of dollars worth of goods on eBay in my name - that was a horrifying experience may I add) but I'll definately warn anyone I know who uses it.
And Jon2 you have to remember, while many of you youngin's are computer and technologically savvy, some of us 'older ducks' aren't as in the know as you are - some of my friends are far older than me and they come to me for advice. I'd like to be able to help them with information like this where I can. Just saying is all ;)
That's a good point. With experience, I've just come to know what e-mails really are from the Hotmail staff and which are just chain mails/scams. I'm by no means an expert, but I see the difference most of the time.
And sorry about your account being hacked, that truly sounds like a horrible experience. I've never been hacked or anything, but then again, I don't shop in the internet at all, and my password is like 19 characters long or something, haha. How did you manage from that situation onwards, if I may ask?
Let's just all spread the word and maybe we'll save a few lives (okay, not the time for jokes, but I had to ). Thanks again Jess, for warning us.

^ Permit me to hijack a second and I'll answer that question ;)
I'm not 100% sure HOW my hotmail account was hacked, but I did make the mistake back in those days of remaining 'logged on' to my usual places until time expired or I physically logged out. I woke up one morning and found all these angry emails from people demaning payment (things like industrial floor cleaners to games that ran on a Northen Hemisphere power outlet and so on, nothing I would ever have use for) and freaked out. In my Hotmail account people from my contacts list - and a guy I was sort of seeing at the time, sent me emails telling me my account had been hacked. This 'person' (and I use the term loosely) had written an email calling me all sorts of names, saying I was actually a lesbian and running off overseas with some woman named Amy and everyone could go (delete expletive) themselves - EVERYONE on my contact list got that email. I was mortified. My parents, friends and bosses from work. I went to the cops but of course there was nothing they could do because technically nothing had been stolen - except my identity - and that couldn't be 'proven' anyway just speculated. After 3 days (thank god) and two different representatives at eBay they realised my account had been phished and notified the affected sellers etc and revoked all sales. Thank god they did. The bill had been somewhere in the vicinity of $22,000. From that day I avoid Hotmail like the plague, visit eBay once every few months and ALWAYS log out AND clear cookies whenever I log offline. Funny how you get a false sense of security with things like AVG and Spy-bot etc - but they can't protect you from everything...
Jess, just as I opened my email I saw two people including you send me the exact thing. I deleted it, and went pfft. I know how people are hijacked through their emails, I'm just smart enough to realise that it's wrong and that is a way to lose friends i.e. using fake emails that'll send out their password and cookie hackers etc etc.

I have seen this before. It's about a few months ago when my sister was checking her mail and she found out this notice. She followed the instructions stated inside this mail, and I think it really worked. Her hotmail was normal.I also did the same thing to my hotmail.
Speedy, I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but have you read at all what's been said? No they are not going to hack your email, that's why Jess kindly put this thread up, if you don't reply to it. If you do reply to it, most likely you're going to get your email hacked.
But coming from a hacker's perspective, I don't think it's real. If it's a real scam, you wouldn't know until after you've been victimised.
Btw, Jess, I didn't mean to sound rude or anything before in that post above speedy.

Must say I agree - when I looked over that sample email my inner Grammar Nazi wanted to strangle those scammers But, I figured it's better to be safe than sorry, and I'd hate it if one of my friends got scammed when I could've prevented it.
